On July 16, Premier League side Wolves will lodge a complaint with UEFA. During a friendly match between Wolves and newly-promoted Italian side Como, Hwang Hee-chan was subjected to racial abuse by an opponent.
Wolves are currently in Marbella, Spain, for their pre-season preparations ahead of the upcoming 2024-25 season. During this time, they played a friendly against Como. The incident occurred during the second half involving Hwang Hee-chan, which sparked anger from other Wolves players. Subsequently, Pedro Neto was sent off for being involved in the ensuing confrontation.
Following the incident, Wolves’ head coach Gary O’Neil spoke with Hwang Hee-chan and offered him the option to withdraw from the game, but Hwang chose to continue playing.
O’Neil said, “Hwang heard racist remarks, which is really disappointing. I spoke with him afterwards and asked if he still wanted to continue playing. He decided to prioritize the team and carry on. Hwang is disappointed, which I understand, but I’m proud that, in such a difficult moment, he still put the team first. Hwang will be alright, and our entire club will fully support him.”
