On July 23, George, the son of former England international Danny Mills, will represent Team GB in the men’s 1500 meters and men’s 5000 meters track events at the Paris Olympics.
Danny Mills had a career that saw him play in 321 club matches and make 19 appearances for England. Notably, he was a regular starter for England in all five games of the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan.
Despite his father’s successful football career, George chose a different path. Danny Mills commented, “My son was good at football, but he just loved running. At around age 14 or 15, he had to make a decision and opted to switch from team sports to individual athletics.”
Danny Mills also noted that athletics can be more thrilling than football: “In football, if you make a mistake, you usually get another chance. Athletics is like a penalty shootout from start to finish – there’s no room for error, and I’ve always tried to teach him that mentally.”
Danny Mills added that the family plans to buy tickets to watch their son compete in the Olympics: “If he makes it to the finals, I’ll be the proudest person in the stadium.”
