The Polish Football Association announced today that for the upcoming 2024-25 season, the Polish League will adopt a new rule: only team captains will be allowed to communicate with the referee on the pitch. This approach mirrors the new regulations implemented in the Euros.
The announcement states that referees need strict protection. The new rule was effective during the 2024 European Championship, and now it is being introduced into the Polish League. Importantly, referees must explain the reasons for their decisions to the captain, and the dialogue between the referee and the captain should take place with mutual respect.
Any player who ignores this rule and communicates with the referee without being the captain will be shown a yellow card immediately. A year ago, we prioritized reviewing deceptive behavior towards referees on the pitch. We will do our utmost to eliminate unsportsmanlike conduct in football, ensuring young fans joining the sport are not influenced by these factors.
Under the new rules, referees will have a new gesture signaling players not to approach or question the referee’s decisions.
