At 15:40 on August 4th, in the women’s singles semifinal of the Paris Olympic Games badminton tournament, Chinese player He Bingjiao faced off against Spanish player Carolina Marin.
The first game started with a closely contested match, both players trading points until they were tied at 6-6. However, He Bingjiao then made consecutive errors due to her opponent’s pressure, allowing Marin to pull ahead to an 11-7 lead. After a brief break, Marin continued her attack, extending her lead to 16-7. He Bingjiao gradually regained her rhythm and narrowed the gap, but the deficit was too large, and she lost the first game 14-21.
The second game began with Marin once again displaying strong dominance, taking an early 3-0 lead and maintaining a lead of around 4-5 points. He Bingjiao was unable to find an effective counter.
When the score reached 10-6, Marin twisted her knee during a one-footed landing after a jump smash, falling to the ground in pain. After receiving brief treatment, she put on a protective brace and continued playing, earning applause from the audience.
Upon resuming play, Marin’s movement was clearly affected by her leg injury, and He Bingjiao scored two consecutive points. Marin then indicated that she could not continue and knelt on the court, shedding tears.
The match was halted due to Marin’s inability to continue because of her injury, allowing He Bingjiao to advance automatically to the final. Tomorrow afternoon, He Bingjiao will face South Korea’s top-ranked player in the world, An Se-young, in the final.
