According to The Athletic (TA), London Mayor Khan has called for Premier League matches to be held in the United States.
Although Premier League CEO Richard Masters previously stated that playing overseas was not part of their current plans, the concept has been revived in recent months.
American broadcaster NBC Sports signed a six-year deal with the Premier League worth $2.7 billion to exclusively broadcast every match from the 22-23 season through to 2027-28. Jon Miller, an executive at the network, told The Athletic that he is pushing for Premier League matches to be played in-season in the U.S.
Opinions vary on whether games should be played abroad, but Khan supports taking the Premier League overseas. “Liverpool, the club I support as Mayor of London, is currently on tour in the U.S. They have many fans there. Why shouldn’t those fans get to see a competitive match? We’ve seen other European leagues play matches elsewhere. All 32 NFL teams have played in London and had great experiences. We’ve had some top baseball teams play in London.”
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said he would do whatever it takes to bring the Premier League to the U.S. Bill Foley, the American owner of Bournemouth, expressed opposition to Premier League matches being played in the U.S.
