Spanish Media Analyze Reasons for Nico Williams’ Decision to Reject Summer Departure: He Believes Many Things Are More Important Than Money

Spanish star Nico Williams confirmed on Tuesday that he will remain at Athletic Bilbao. He returned to the training ground early and told fans that he is looking forward to the upcoming season. Despite being a top target for Barcelona and attracting interest from Paris Saint-Germain, he decided to stay with Athletic Bilbao for at least one more season.

Nico’s €58 million release clause made him an attractive option for top European clubs this summer, but Nico decided it was in his best interest to remain in the Basque Country, despite significant pressure from Barcelona. According to an analysis by Marca, several key reasons underlie Nico’s decision to stay.

Firstly, he feels that staying at San Mamés Stadium will be beneficial for his development. Athletic Bilbao is about to compete in European tournaments, which is a first for him, as well as an opportunity to play two or three games per week. Currently, he is playing for a club tailored to his needs, and under the guidance of head coach Ernesto Valverde, he has shown consistent improvement over the past two seasons.

Secondly, his close relationship with his family and brother Iñaki Williams also influenced his decision to stay with Athletic Bilbao for at least another season—this bond is very important to the young Nico, and he had promised to play alongside his brother in European competitions.

While a transfer to Barcelona, especially Paris Saint-Germain, would have made him wealthier, Athletic Bilbao already pays him handsomely, having offered him a new contract less than 12 months ago. Another significant figure is his agent Félix Tant, who has a good relationship with Athletic Bilbao and does not solely focus on money. Tant could have greatly benefited from a transfer, but he believed that Nico staying with Athletic Bilbao was the best choice.

Now Barcelona has shifted its attention to Dani Olmo, with sporting director Deco reportedly negotiating with him in Leipzig. For Athletic Bilbao and club president Jon Uriarte, keeping Nico will be seen as a major victory. This also earns Nico some reputation, and when he ultimately decides to leave, the circumstances will undoubtedly be different.
