Alonso: Unable to Explain Last-Minute Victory; Controlling Such a Match is Not Easy

In the first round of the Bundesliga, Leverkusen secured a dramatic victory. They took a 2-0 lead in the first half but were tenaciously caught up by their opponents. However, in the last minute of the game—the 101st minute—Wirtz’s goal helped the team clinch a decisive win, earning them a good start to the new season.

After the match, Leverkusen’s head coach Alonso said, “I have no explanation for this; this is football, and it happens to us frequently, but I also want to analyze what happened. We were leading 2-0 and could have played better, with many opportunities to extend our lead. Then we conceded from a set-piece, which opened up the game. However, we showed resilience and ultimately turned the game around. I am satisfied with the result and our performance, though there are certainly areas that need improvement.”

When asked about specific areas needing improvement, Alonso said, “We need to learn how to better control the rhythm of the game when we’re leading. When we were 2-0 up, we couldn’t maintain our composure. Mönchengladbach caused us a lot of trouble with their high pressing tactics, so controlling the game under such circumstances is indeed not easy.”

Talking about the depth of the squad, Alonso said, “Our squad is very strong. Perhaps there is room for further improvement. We have already communicated with Simon and Fernando, aiming to build a comprehensive team. The schedule this season will be very tight; the Bundesliga is our top priority, but we also look forward to making an impact in the Champions League.”

Regarding positions where the team still needs strengthening, Alonso smiled and said, “We will carefully evaluate the team’s needs.”
