According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United has appointed a new Performance Director today, marking another step in Ratcliffe’s reform of the football department.
It is reported that Manchester United has announced the appointment of Sam Erith as Performance Director, with a contract lasting until the end of this season, indicating that the club’s transformation process continues to advance. Erith has extensive experience in health and sports science, having previously worked for the England national team, Manchester City, and Tottenham Hotspur.
Erith will join Manchester United on an interim basis and is recognized as an expert in the field. According to the Daily Mail, Sporting Director Dan Ashworth sees Erith as a key target, and Erith will officially start his new role on Monday. His new responsibilities are expected to include ensuring that head coach Ten Hag and the players can face challenges in demanding environments.
Erith will work closely with Manchester United’s new football leadership team, which was established after Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS Group acquired a stake in the club.
Insiders believe that despite a less-than-ideal start to the season, Erith’s role is crucial for the resurgence of Manchester United.
This move is one of a series of measures taken by the new management to ensure the club maintains its leading position in both football and technological advancements. Erith previously served as Senior Vice President of Performance and Science at Madison Square Garden Sports Corp., which owns the New York Knicks and the New York Rangers, and he will report directly to Ashworth.
Erith graduated from Loughborough University and, after becoming a sports scientist, held several positions within the FA and the England national team. From 2016 to 2017, he also served as a consultant to Southgate.
Erith also spent six years as Head of Sports Science at Tottenham Hotspur and ten years in a similar role at Manchester City before leaving in November 2022 to develop in the US.
Since INEOS Group took a stake in January, Manchester United has undergone a comprehensive overhaul of its off-field operations. Ashworth joined Manchester United after ending long-term negotiations with Newcastle, while Jason Wilcox moved from Southampton to become Technical Director.
In addition, Omar Berrada transferred from Manchester City to Manchester United, taking on the role of the club’s new CEO.
