Ajax head coach Farigliano announced after the Europa League match that the team’s captaincy will be changing, no longer held by Bergwijn.
Bergwijn was appointed captain last season under the direction of coach Steyn and also enjoyed trust under subsequent coach Van der Heijden, but it is clear that Farigliano now believes the 34-year-old former England international, Henderson, is more deserving of the role.
“Yes, Henderson will be the captain. Bergwijn and Boguis are also important, but there can only be one captain, and that is Henderson,” Farigliano said at the post-match press conference. “I have also spoken with Bergwijn about this, and he has no issues with the decision.”
