On Wednesday, the French sports daily L’Equipe apologized for its Tuesday front page article which sparked widespread controversy. The report, titled “Unconditional Love,” covered Greenwood’s performance after joining Marseille.
L’Equipe stated on its website that the front page was a “total failure.” The newspaper explained that they had intended to use three full pages, including the front page, to cover Greenwood’s impressive performance at Marseille, including his three goals in two matches and his quick acquisition of unconditional support from the club and most fans.
The statement from L’Equipe emphasized that they strongly oppose domestic violence, and the title “Unconditional Love” referred to the attitude of Marseille fans towards Greenwood, not their own stance.
L’Equipe stressed that they do not support this kind of unconditional love and had repeatedly reported on the domestic violence allegations against Greenwood before he joined Marseille. Additionally, L’Equipe revisited this shocking event on the second and third pages of Tuesday’s paper, publishing an article reminding readers that Greenwood remains unforgiven in Britain.
This apology came after a similar incident last month when the magazine Football caused online controversy due to a related event. The magazine had published a report about the match between Marseille and Brest on its platform, accompanied by the comment “Mason Greenwood scored a brilliant goal right from the start, as always.”
