After losing the 2024 European Cup final to Spain with a score of 1-2, Southgate announced his resignation as head coach of the England team. According to The Mirror, Southgate has now joined UEFA to serve as a technical observer.
This is not the first time Southgate has taken on this role; last season he contributed his insights to UEFA’s technical reports, focusing on the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. Now, he has agreed to become a regular member of the UEFA Technical Observation Committee.
The job of a technical observer is to analyze matches from a coaching perspective, looking for new tactical trends. They can use the most advanced visualization tools and data analysis to aid their observations.
In addition to Southgate, former Manchester United manager Solskjaer and Italian footballing legend Capello also took on similar roles during the 2024 European Cup.
Southgate has also been involved in other UEFA projects, such as an advisory committee established in 2023 aimed at reviewing match rules and refereeing work. In this committee, Southgate worked alongside Mourinho and other well-known figures in the football world.
Although Southgate has not yet announced specific plans for returning to coaching, given his achievements with the England team, there will certainly be no shortage of invitations if he decides to make a comeback.
Prior to the 2024 European Cup, Southgate was considered a hot candidate for the Manchester United managerial position, but the club ultimately chose to continue supporting Ten Hag. Prior to this, Southgate’s name had also been linked with several other clubs.
During his tenure with England, Southgate gained a lot of recognition. During the European Cup, when Southgate faced criticism from outside, UEFA President Ceferin came out in support, stating that Southgate is one of the most successful coaches in England’s history.
