On August 22, the first round of Bundesliga matches will kick off this weekend. According to foreign media ESPN, Dortmund fans plan to stage a large-scale protest during the first round of the Bundesliga against the sponsorship agreement signed by the team with German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall.
It is reported that the Dortmund South Stand Fan Association, representing more than 90 Dortmund fan groups, issued a statement on Wednesday: “We firmly oppose the Dortmund management and its board for agreeing to use Dortmund’s appeal to enhance the public image of an arms company and, in the process, abandon their own values.”
On May 29, three days before Dortmund’s Champions League final match against Real Madrid, Dortmund announced a three-year sponsorship deal with Düsseldorf-based Rheinmetall, marking the first time in Bundesliga history that a club has entered into a sponsorship partnership with the arms industry.
The Dortmund South Stand Fan Association stated: “The news of Rheinmetall sponsoring Dortmund was shocking, and it was noted that the opinions of fan representatives were not sought at any stage of the negotiations.”
“We call on all fans attending this weekend’s home game against Frankfurt to express their opposition to this deal. Please prepare banners and signs to express your criticism when the second half begins.”
