According to journalist Erik van Haren from the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, the Mercedes F1 team is already aware that Verstappen will not be joining them next year, and so they have decided to promote Antonelli to race alongside Russell for the upcoming season.
There had been numerous rumors suggesting that Verstappen might switch to the Mercedes team next year. However, Erik van Haren reports that the Mercedes team is now certain that these rumors will not materialize, and thus has abandoned any hope of signing Verstappen.
If Mercedes does indeed reserve the second driver seat for Antonelli, only three driver seats remain open for next year. Alpine has yet to confirm Gasly’s teammate, Sauber has announced Hulkenberg but has not named their other driver, and Scuderia AlphaTauri has only confirmed that Tsunoda will be racing next season.
