Greenwood Scores on Ligue 1 Debut, Also Concedes a Penalty Kick

In the first match of the new Ligue 1 season, Marseille defeated Brest 5-1. Former Manchester United player Mason Greenwood had an outstanding performance, making a perfect debut.

This summer, Greenwood joined Marseille for a transfer fee of 31.6 million euros and signed a five-year contract. The 22-year-old English forward scored two goals in the match against Brest, showcasing his offensive prowess.

Greenwood not only became the third Olympique de Marseille player in the 21st century to score at least two goals in his Ligue 1 debut after Dimitri Payet (2013) and Luis Suarez (Colombia, 2022), but he also played a key role in three other goals.

Just three minutes into the game, Greenwood used his speed advantage to score the opening goal. He then assisted in Enrico’s goal and helped expand the lead through a penalty kick. In the second half, Greenwood’s cross led to a mistake by the opposing goalkeeper, creating an opportunity for Enrico to score the fourth goal for the team.

In the 69th minute, Greenwood was fouled by Amavi in the penalty area, earning a penalty kick for Marseille. Greenwood gave up the chance to complete a hat-trick, with new signing Elie Wahi successfully converting the penalty, helping Marseille secure a 5-1 victory.

Greenwood’s performance earned him the title of ‘Man of the Match.’ His excellent form did not come as a surprise to head coach Roberto De Zerbi, given Greenwood’s impressive performances during pre-season matches.

Greenwood is expected to become a central figure in Marseille’s attack. The team invested heavily in the summer transfer window, bringing in several new signings including goalkeeper Jerónimo Rulli, center-back Derek Cornelius, midfielder Hojbjerg, and forward Elie Wahi, all of whom featured in the match against Brest.

Marseille demonstrated good teamwork with a fluid 4-2-3-1 formation, indicating they are well-prepared for the new season. With the addition of former Premier League stars like Greenwood and Hojbjerg, Marseille has the potential to challenge for the title, although they will face strong competition from Paris Saint-Germain.
