Overcoming Adversity! Former Jeju United Goalkeeper, Paralyzed Below the Waist in a Car Accident, Now Aims for Paralympics with Shooting

Last November, former Jeju United goalkeeper Yoo Yeon-Su suffered lower body paralysis as a result of a car accident, which forced him to retire from the sport he loved. According to recent reports from South Korean media, Yoo Yeon-Su has not succumbed to his fate; instead, he has taken up shooting and hopes to participate in the Paralympics.

Although paralyzed and dependent on a wheelchair, Yoo Yeon-Su’s physical condition remains excellent. As a goalkeeper, he possessed outstanding upper body strength and reflexes, which are well-suited to the sport of shooting. He has begun his training, aiming for the Los Angeles Paralympics in four years. Yoo Yeon-Su stated, “I can no longer fulfill my dreams in football, but in four years, I will realize my Olympic dream. My goal is to win a gold medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics.”

Yoo Yeon-Su was previously the goalkeeper for the K League team Jeju United. He joined the team in 2020 with high hopes for the future. However, in 2023, at the age of 25, he suffered severe injuries in a car accident caused by a drunk driver, resulting in permanent paralysis below the waist, and had to retire at the peak of his career.
