Flick: Points are crucial but there's room for improvement in all areas; Lewandowski's role extends beyond scoring goals

In the early morning of August 18, Barcelona secured a 2-1 victory over Valencia in their first match of the new La Liga season, giving Flick a winning start.

After the game, the German coach commented on the match and the performance of some players.

Regarding the win in the first match, Flick said, “The three points are very important, but everything is far from perfect. The second half was much better than the first; we made many mistakes in the first half. Valencia capitalized on these errors to take the lead, but the goal just before halftime was crucial for our start in the second half.”

Flick praised Lewandowski, who scored twice: “He is a professional player, very important for us. He scored two goals and did excellent work defensively.”

About Kubitsh being substituted, Flick explained, “We had to be cautious to prevent him from receiving a second yellow card. That’s why we made the substitution.”

Speaking about Balde’s injury, Flick stated, “I think he’s fine. We talked to him, and he said he’s okay. We’ll conduct an examination when we return to Barcelona.”

Flick also praised Yamal: “He’s an outstanding player, very important for us. Everyone wants to see him play, so he also received applause here. There’s still a lot we need to improve upon, but the season has just started, and we need to build confidence. These three points are very important for us. Today was a tough battle due to the pitch, the fans… it was an intense match. But I believe we deserved these three points.”
