On October 7, Makélélé announced his resignation as head coach of Stratos Tripolis, citing the club management’s failure to honor their promises.
Earlier in mid-September, Makélélé became the new head coach of the Greek team Stratos Tripolis. Since taking over, he has led the team through only three league matches, achieving one win and two draws.
In an interview, Makélélé disclosed the reason for his abrupt departure: “Before I took the job, they promised me full control over team selections. It should be my decision on which players get to play; transfers are not part of my responsibilities.”
“If you want to fire me because of poor results, that’s fine. That’s football. But I don’t want anyone else telling me who I should field.”
“In the last game, the management insisted that a key player should be benched. This player is not highly paid, but he is one of the best in the team. I only let him play for 20 minutes, and he provided two assists, helping us win the match. Yet, there are people within the club who do not want him to play.”
