Szczesny: Lewandowski Was the First to Call and Convinced Me to Join Barcelona

The 34-year-old Polish goalkeeper, Szczesny, announced his retirement last month, but has now confirmed his comeback and signed a one-year contract with Barcelona.

Szczesny was signed as an emergency substitute for the injured Ter Stegen, who suffered a torn knee tendon two weeks ago during a match. In an interview with club media, Szczesny expressed that even at this early stage, he has already felt the warmth of the fans.

Szczesny said, “This is an incredibly proud moment. I was already prepared for retirement and was satisfied with the situation. In the first two days since arriving in this city, the enthusiasm people have shown towards me and the importance they place on the team made me feel proud and like I’ve become part of this exciting family. Despite being a great institution and football club, I feel a sense of family here. Family is very important to me, and now my family has grown a bit.”

Szczesny also revealed that it was his long-time national teammate, Lewandowski, who facilitated this transfer. Szczesny added, “He was the first one to call and inquire about this possibility, as I had retired. At first, I wasn’t ready for a new challenge, but after discussing it with my family and friends, they all told me that not accepting this opportunity would be a mistake. Therefore, Lewandowski played a very important role in this matter because it was his idea that convinced me.”

Szczesny also attended the Champions League match at Montjuïc Stadium on Tuesday night, where Barcelona defeated Young Boys 5-0.
