In the first round of the Champions League group stage, Atlético Madrid turned a 1-2 deficit into a 2-1 victory over Leipzig thanks to goals from Griezmann and Giménez. After the match, Atlético coach Simeone expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance and emphasized the importance of continuous improvement.
Simeone stated, “The players delivered an excellent performance, it would have been a pity to lose two points. The opposition scored through a counterattack, but we quickly regained our composure and effectively curbed their offensive momentum. We tried various attacking strategies, including efforts from Correa, Alvarez, Griezmann, and others. In the first half, we had three or four good chances to score, but couldn’t convert them. In the second half, we had better control of the game. Especially in the last ten minutes, Giménez’s goal was crucial. The entire team performed exceptionally well, and the substitutes also played a key role. If the substitutes can maintain this level of performance, we stand a good chance of achieving our goals.”
“I am very satisfied with the team’s performance; it was a fantastic match. Even if it had ended in a draw, my evaluation wouldn’t have changed. We employed different tactics and player combinations for this match. The players understood the strategy perfectly, and we secured a crucial victory. During the 70th to 80th minute, we faced some difficulties and felt like we were about to lose the game. We reorganized the midfield with Llorente, Gallagher, Rino, Koke, and Solos, forming a stronger lineup that effectively controlled the center of the pitch. Eventually, we scored, although we could have done so earlier.”
“In such a format, we must strive for victory at all costs; a draw means nothing to us. We need to win more games, and if we can’t win, we must at least ensure we gain something. Ultimately, the team with the most wins will advance to the quarterfinals without needing to play two-legged ties.”
Simeone praised Griezmann: “He is very happy. When he is in good form, he always brings something special to the game. We need to support and encourage him to maintain his high level of performance.”
Regarding Alvarez’s position, Simeone said, “He plays as a forward, which is precisely where his expertise lies. I don’t find anything unusual about it. His brilliant tackle helped us equalize. I brought him on because he is essential. He came here to showcase his abilities, and he has indeed done so. Solos is similar; although he hasn’t scored many goals yet, he has the potential to score more, and we still have great expectations for him.”
Talking about the fans booing De Paul, Simeone denied it: “I didn’t notice any boos. The fans were fantastic, and we tried our best to repay their support.”
