Professor Carlos Alvarez, considered a pioneer in physical training in Spanish football, stated in an interview with EFE that he believes it is “necessary” for teams to focus on physical preparation during the pre-season, laying a foundation for subsequent matches.
Alvarez believes that because players “only play matches,” lacking the muscular endurance, flexibility, and coordination obtained through pre-season training, these factors lead to injuries and problems.
In this context, facing the numerous injuries suffered by players who are in a system of frequent matches, he warned that from the beginning of the pre-season, players “do not truly train,” only “play matches,” and these shortcomings result in players “not being able to control their bodies well.”
He further pointed out that due to the frequency of matches, “there is not enough time for proper training,” and although players “should have good physical preparation before matches,” this cannot be achieved because they have to participate in matches right from the start of the pre-season.
