Alonso: Playing against Bayern took a lot out of us; it's too early to calculate points needed for qualification

At 3 AM on October 2, in the second round of the Champions League, Bayer Leverkusen secured a 1-0 victory over AC Milan at home. Leverkusen’s head coach, Alonso, attended the post-match press conference.

Alonso said, “In both of our Champions League matches, we maintained the right mentality. We showed AC Milan the respect they deserve and took them very seriously. Our performance in the last 20 minutes wasn’t great, but the players gave everything, which is why we got the three points. We put in a huge effort against Bayern and were under immense pressure, which left us feeling fatigued. Regardless, the players did their utmost to win these 3 points.”

“I am very satisfied with the first 60 minutes of the game. We performed exceptionally well in the first half. When facing Italian teams, you always have to play smartly. We felt we had the upper hand, but they are dangerous, waiting for mistakes. In the first half, we didn’t make too many errors.”

When asked how many points he thought would be required for the team to advance to the Round of 16 in the Champions League, he responded, “It’s too early to get the calculators out and figure out the points needed for qualification. We will go to Brest and try to win there, perhaps we’ll discuss the standings in January.”
