Wright: Haaland's act of throwing the ball at Gabriel from behind is a cowardly move

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has stated that during Manchester City’s match against Arsenal, Haaland’s act of throwing the ball behind Gabriel after his team equalized was a “cowardly move.”

At the time, after John Stones scored, Haaland picked up the ball from the net and threw it towards the back of Arsenal defender Gabriel’s head, who was pulling his jersey over his head in disappointment and facing away from Haaland. The VAR reviewed the incident but did not consider it to be a foul requiring a red card, thus choosing not to intervene. The English Football Association (FA) stated that they would not take further action on any incidents during this 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium, including the heated argument between players at the final whistle.

Wright said: “The only thing that really upset me was Haaland’s cowardly act. Throwing the ball at Gabriel’s head when he couldn’t see. When Gabriel had his back turned, it was truly a cowardly move. You know, he wouldn’t dare do something like that face-to-face with Gabriel. This bothered me more than anything else. I thought you (Haaland) were above this.”

After the game, Gabriel said in an interview: “We are waiting for Manchester City at home. Haaland? I don’t remember what he did; it’s normal for there to be battles, wars, and provocations in the game. It’s part of the game, and now it’s over.”
