According to South Korean media reports, due to issues with the home pitch, Gwangju FC’s AFC Champions League Elite Match will be relocated to Yongin. Currently, Gwangju FC officials have also confirmed this news.
Following the AFC Champions League Elite Match on the 17th of last month against Yokohama F. Marinos, the AFC conducted an inspection of Gwangju FC’s home stadium, the Gwangju World Cup Stadium, and in their final report, pointed out that the turf quality did not meet standards, making it difficult for Gwangju FC to use this stadium as their home venue in the AFC Champions League Elite Matches.
In the future, the Gwangju World Cup Stadium can only be used after receiving approval from the AFC. If the stadium is not approved for use, Gwangju FC will have to find a new venue that meets international league standards. Gwangju FC has also stated that they will maintain the stadium before the AFC Champions League Elite Match, including turf recovery efforts such as nutrient spraying, seeding and planting grass, soil work, and coring.
The worst-case scenario would be if Gwangju FC cannot play in Gwangju, and there are no suitable stadiums nearby. Therefore, Gwangju FC had to set their temporary home venue for the second round match against Johor at Yongin Stadium, located 40 kilometers south of Seoul. This stadium will serve as the home venue for South Korea’s World Cup Qualifier match against Iraq.
