UK Media: Legal Challenge by Manchester City Against Premier League Sponsorship Rules to Be Resolved Soon

On September 24, according to the Daily Mail, the legal challenge launched by Manchester City against the Premier League’s sponsorship rules will have its verdict announced soon.

Out of the 115 charges leveled against Manchester City, the club’s sponsor, Etihad Airways, has questioned the Premier League’s Associated Party Transaction (APT) financial policy. The APT policy was introduced by the Premier League in December 2021 with the aim of preventing clubs from entering into inflated sponsorship agreements with sponsors and ensuring that when a single entity controls multiple clubs, players can be traded between these clubs at fair market prices.

Since February this year, Manchester City has been engaged in legal action against the APT policy. Manager Pep Guardiola has also expressed dissatisfaction with the policy, viewing it as discriminatory.

Some rival clubs are concerned about Manchester City’s appeal, fearing that if Manchester City wins the case, it could undermine the competitive balance of the Premier League due to weakened financial controls, potentially leading to a decline in the overall interest in the league.
