Drew but Still Showed off His Goal: Hojlund Angers Fans, Forced to Apologize

Manchester United forward Hojlund had to apologize to fans for his remarks after the Europa League match.

After Manchester United drew 3-3 with Porto, Hojlund posted a picture of himself celebrating his goal with the caption, “I spent six weeks preparing this celebration.” This statement sparked considerable controversy among fans, many of whom felt that such a celebration was inappropriate given the draw, especially when Manchester United had been leading 2-0 and nearly lost the game.

Faced with a wave of criticism from fans, Hojlund tried to defuse the situation by editing his post: “I practiced this celebration for six weeks. It would have been perfect if we had won the game.” However, this explanation did not entirely quell the anger of the fans.

Eventually, the Danish striker had to issue a dedicated apology: “I noticed some fans’ anger; I was never satisfied with the draw. I just wanted to express my joy at scoring after being out for a long time.”

Hojlund further stated, “Of course, my goal is to satisfy every fan. Please look forward to our game on Sunday.”

This goal was also Hojlund’s first of the season. Previously, he had been injured during a summer friendly against Arsenal, causing him to miss several early-season games. Zirkzee, who replaced him, scored in the game against Fulham but then went on an eight-game goal drought.

Manchester United is set to face Aston Villa, who are in good form, on October 6th. Notably, Aston Villa just defeated the formidable Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
