Schmeichel: City's Home Atmosphere against Inter Milan Lacks Energy, Unworthy of the Champions League

In the first round of the Champions League, Manchester City drew 0-0 with Inter Milan at home. Peter Schmeichel, a Manchester United legend and commentator for the match, stated that the atmosphere at City’s Etihad Stadium was lackluster and unworthy of a Champions League level event.

As one of the favorites to win the Champions League, City faced Serie A champions Inter Milan at home, but Erling Haaland failed to carry his Premier League form into the match, resulting in a 0-0 draw and no winning start.

Schmeichel commented during the broadcast that it was a dull game, “I don’t think this was an exciting draw; I found the game boring. However, I do think Inter Milan did well in preventing City from attacking.”

He then added that the atmosphere at City’s home ground did not live up to the expectations of a Champions League event, “I love exciting games which can also energize the crowd. Yet, at the Etihad, none of this was evident. We could only hear the cheers of Inter Milan fans, and the Etihad has lost its usual atmosphere.”

Richard Dunne, a former City defender and fellow commentator, expressed dissatisfaction with Schmeichel’s comments, “You’re not respecting my club? You should have seen the atmosphere last Saturday when City beat Brentford at home. You should have felt the atmosphere in that game.”

Schmeichel humorously responded to Dunne’s challenge, “I often go to the stadium to experience the atmosphere. Perhaps City fans didn’t bring the joy of last week’s victory into the Champions League match. The atmosphere at the stadium today was indeed very quiet.”
