After the match, Maresca had a brief conversation with the visiting team’s players. Subsequently, the players complained that Maresca had issued a death threat to them, saying during their conversation, “Next time we meet, I will kill you.”

Ultimately, Maresca was banned from officiating for one month. Previously, he was scheduled to serve as the fourth official for the Champions League match between PSV Eindhoven and Sporting Lisbon, but was replaced at the last minute.
