Port Finally Triumphs Over Shenhua, First Time to Advance to the FA Cup Final; Rematch Against Taishan Aims for Revenge and the Grand Slam

Port Finally Triumphs Over Shenhua, First Time to Advance to the FA Cup Final; Rematch Against Taishan Aims for Revenge and the Grand SlamThe fourth Shanghai Derby of 2024 saw Shanghai Port finally exact revenge on Shanghai Shenhua at home, winning against them for the first time this year, and advancing to the FA Cup final for the third time in history. Their opponent remains the familiar Shandong Taishan, presenting another opportunity for Shanghai Port to overcome their FA Cup title drought.

The Super Cup at the beginning of the year saw Shanghai Port overshadowed by Shanghai Shenhua. In the subsequent two league encounters, Port faced one draw and one loss against Shenhua. Particularly in the second round, Port’s loss to Shenhua almost depleted their lead in the standings, making the championship race unpredictable.

The FA Cup semi-final was the fourth Shanghai Derby this year. Despite Chen Jiyi’s world-class goal giving Shenhua a glimpse of hope, Chitadini’s brace and Bao Yaxiong conceding a penalty, which Oscar successfully converted, ultimately dashed Shenhua’s hopes. This year, Shanghai Port finally won the Shanghai Derby for the first time, settling a score.

This is the third time in history that Shanghai Port has reached the FA Cup final, following 2017 and 2021. However, both previous finals ended in nightmares for Port. In 2017, they were defeated by their city rivals Shenhua, and in 2021, they faced the familiar opponent Shandong Taishan, missing out on the title once again.

Shanghai Port has already secured domestic titles including the Chinese Super League and the Super Cup. The only title missing is the FA Cup, which would complete their domestic grand slam. Will this year’s rematch against Shandong Taishan offer an opportunity for Port to seek revenge and fulfill their dream?
