Official: Varane Announces Termination of Contract with Como, Ending His Career

Varane wrote on social media: Throughout my career, I have faced many challenges, meeting difficulties time and again, almost everything was considered impossible. Incredible emotions, special moments, and memories that will stay with me for a lifetime. Looking back on these moments, I announce with great pride and a sense of achievement that I will retire, leaving the sport we all love. I hold myself to the highest standards, and I want to say goodbye in a strong way, rather than just clinging to the game. Listening to your heart and intuition requires great courage. Desire and need are two different things. I have fallen a thousand times and risen again; this time, I choose to stop, hang up my boots, and play my last match winning a trophy at Wembley. I loved fighting for myself, for the clubs, for the nation, for my teammates, and for the supporters of every team I played for. From Lens to Madrid to Manchester, representing our national team. I defended every badge with all my might, enjoying every minute of the entire journey. Competing at the highest level is an exhilarating experience. It tests every aspect of your body and mind. The emotions we experience are like no other. As athletes, we are never satisfied, never accept success. This is our nature and what drives us. I have no regrets; I wouldn’t change anything. I won far more than I could ever imagine, but beyond honors and trophies, I am proud that, regardless of circumstances, I always upheld honest principles and endeavored to leave every place better than when I found it. I hope I made you all proud. Therefore, a new life begins off the field. I will remain in Como, just not wearing my boots and shin guards. Regarding this, I look forward to sharing more with you soon. Now, to the supporters of every club I played for, my teammates, coaches, and staff… thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this journey even more special than my wildest dreams. Thank you, football. Love, Rapha

After his contract expired this summer, Varane left Manchester United and joined Como on a free transfer, signing a 2+1 year contract. However, Varane’s move to the Italian league did not help him escape injuries. After playing once in the Coppa Italia, the French international suffered a knee injury, missing all five Serie A games at the start of the season.

The 31-year-old Varane rose to fame through the Lens youth academy. In 2010, at less than 18 years old, Varane became a member of the Lens first team, and a year later transferred to the Bernabeu for a fee of 11 million euros. After serving Real Madrid for 10 years, Varane moved to Manchester United.

Looking back on Varane’s career, he won one World Cup title and one UEFA Nations League title with the French national team. At the club level, he claimed four Champions League titles, four Club World Cup titles, three La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey title, one FA Cup title, and one English League Cup title.
