Mao Jianqing: Alcohol is My Best Friend and My Biggest Enemy

Mao Jianqing stated: “My best friend is alcohol, and my biggest enemy is also alcohol. I see myself very clearly; I might be too straightforward and too emotional, unable to keep certain things inside, prone to impulsiveness. A player with character is definitely different in some aspects. But if I don’t speak up, the system expects me to have the ability while restraining my personality.

I fully understand our traditional culture, where some things require you to see the essence of reality over time, but I didn’t do well. Some people can handle it, and I had to bear the consequences myself. I had a promising career ahead, and the club was keen on nurturing me, possibly leading higher-level teams gradually.

It was alcohol that ruined me, but I don’t regret it. I accept my current situation very much, running my own club without being constrained, not having to deal with more human complexities, and channeling all my passion onto this training field is enough, being wholeheartedly devoted to the children. I face my shortcomings directly and hope you can tolerate them as well.”
