June 16th, Germany opened the European Championship with a convincing 5-1 victory over Scotland. Renowned media commentator Ji Yuyang expressed on social media that German international Toni Kroos completed 102 passes out of 103 attempted in his 80 minutes on the pitch, achieving an astonishing 99% pass accuracy. This is the highest success rate among all players to have made 100 or more passes in a single Euro match since the statistic was recorded (beginning in 1980).
The journalist pointed out that some might think Kroos only played safe passes. However, he was also the player with the most “line-breaking passes” in the 2023-2024 UEFA Champions League season, registering 194 such passes. A “line-breaking pass” can be understood as a pass that penetrates through the opposition’s defensive line (bypassing at least two defenders).
Furthermore, it was noted that “Kroos was also the player who made the most passes into the attacking third in this season’s Champions League, with a total of 64. He truly retired at the pinnacle of his career.”
