The Netherlands are about to embark on their Euro campaign, and ahead of the tournament, manager Koeman has appointed Ake as the new vice-captain. Ake shared his thoughts in an interview.
Ake said, “I was surprised, but at the same time, I feel very honored and happy. It’s a great privilege, and I will do my best to fulfill this role. In recent years, I’ve performed well, become more important in the national team, and won many awards with my club. Maybe the coach thinks it’s the right moment for me to take this step. Considering my age and experience, I believe it’s a good move.”
“Van Dijk is the captain, and I’m delighted to be his deputy. We’re also good friends off the pitch. We discuss a lot, which makes things easier. There may be challenges in matches, but we’ll face them together. Good communication will definitely help.”
“I think I can excel in this role and continue to grow. I also hope to play a significant part in terms of leadership.”
