On September 22, the 2024 F1 season’s Singapore Grand Prix main event took place. Norris won comfortably, with Verstappen and Piastri following in second and third.
Mercdes driver Hamilton marked his 350th F1 Grand Prix, choosing to start on soft tires. Chinese driver Zhou Guanyu opted for hard tires. Additionally, there are rumors that the Singapore Grand Prix may be veteran Ricciardo’s last race.
The race began with Norris, starting from the front row, holding his position at Turn 1, preventing Verstappen from overtaking. Sainz had a less than ideal start, running off the track and dropping to twelfth place. After the first lap, the top seven positions remained unchanged.
In the first six laps, Norris and Verstappen successively set the fastest laps of the race, making it difficult for Hamilton behind them to find an opportunity to overtake.
By Lap 10, Perez was still in tenth place. Sainz, in twelfth, continued to chase down Tsunoda ahead.
On Lap 11, Ricciardo, who also chose to start on soft tires, pitted, spending 3.5 seconds in the pit lane.
On Lap 14, Sainz pitted, taking 2.6 seconds, switching to hard tires and returning to the track in eighteenth place, successfully defending against Albon’s attack.
Norris was clearly leading, continuously setting fastest laps. After 15 laps, he was more than ten seconds ahead of Verstappen. Albon had to retire due to overheating issues with his car.
Sainz then overtook Zhou Guanyu, followed by Hamilton overtaking Magnussen.
On Lap 26, Hamilton used DRS to overtake Tsunoda and move up to tenth, but he went too wide out of the corner and was passed back.
On Lap 29, Leclerc accelerated to overtake Hulkenberg and moved up to fourth. Norris locked his tires while turning, scraping the wall with his front wing and losing about four seconds, but fortunately the damage was not serious.
Laps 30 and 31 saw Verstappen and Norris complete their pit stops respectively.
On Lap 40, Piastri overtook Hamilton on the outside.
On Lap 41, Leclerc overtook Alonso to move into seventh.
Two-thirds through the race, Norris maintained a comfortable lead.
On Laps 43 and 44, Sainz and Leclerc swapped positions, with Leclerc chasing fifth-placed Hamilton.
On Lap 45, Piastri overtook Russell on the outside to move into third.
On Lap 50, Leclerc overtook Hamilton and began chasing Russell for fourth place.
Approaching the end of the race on Lap 59, the gap between Leclerc and Russell was within 0.5 seconds.
Magnussen retired, and Leclerc failed to overtake Russell. Ricciardo set the fastest lap of the race in the final moments.
Notably, this was the first time in Singapore Grand Prix history without a safety car deployment.
Ultimately, Norris won comfortably, with Verstappen and Piastri following in second and third. Positions four through ten were: Russell, Lecler, Hamilton, Sainz, Alonso, Hulkenberg, and Perez. Chinese driver Zhou Guanyu finished fifteenth.
