Gallagher: Doesn't Mind Being Called a Dog by English Fans, Dueling Bellingham in the Derby Will Be Tough

On the morning of September 20, Atlético Madrid will face off against Leipzig in the first round of the first stage of the Champions League. Before the game, Gallagher gave an exclusive interview to The Athletic, where he talked about Chelsea, Atlético Madrid, nicknames, and derbies.

Talking about joining Atlético Madrid from Chelsea, Gallagher said, “I feel valued here, which is very important for any player. Chelsea is a large football club, on par with Atlético Madrid as one of the world’s top clubs, but I have taken an exciting step forward, starting to play in the Champions League and challenging for the trophy, which makes me more confident and happier.”

“Looking back at my time at Chelsea, I am very proud and honored to have played for this club. Atlético Madrid is the perfect club to start a new chapter in my career, and it’s a great fortune to join this team. When thirty thousand fans attended my unveiling ceremony, singing ‘Welcome to the Jungle,’ I was extremely excited!”

Gallagher is called a “pitbull” by Atlético Madrid fans. The player said, “I remember this was created by Atlético Madrid. In England, people call me a dog because I chase every ball on the field, just like a dog chasing a ball in the park. I don’t mind this nickname; I take it as a compliment.”

Talking about coach Simeone, Gallagher pointed out, “Initially, we needed a translator to help us communicate, but soon I could understand his Spanish. He knows my game very well, understands what I’m best at and what I’m not so good at. In the past few games, he has told me about my strengths and what I should do on the field, which has really helped me. I am confident and comfortable in my role.”

At the end of the month, Atlético Madrid will face Real Madrid, and Gallagher will also face his England teammate Bellingham. Regarding this, Gallagher said, “After joining Atlético Madrid, I haven’t seen Belling yet. Next time I see him, we’ll have a good chat. I’m looking forward to the derby! Belling is an outstanding player, a top talent, and every time I face him, I find it very tough.”
