On September 27, media figure Yuan Jia posted a video on social media, directly stating that certain teams in the Chinese Super League (CSL) are inflating their attendance figures and focusing on deceit rather than cultivating a fan base.
Yuan Jia said, “In an honest league, even the attendance figures are fake. What else can be real? The attendance at CSL matches is typically a very good objective reflection of a team’s fan base. Most teams accurately report their numbers when playing at home. However, there are some teams where it’s obvious there aren’t many people in the stands, so sparse that they even hesitate to show wide-angle shots during broadcasts for fear of losing face. So, when reporting the attendance, they inflate the numbers by double or more.”
“We see the advertisement for an honest league scrolling on the stadium billboards every day. Is this minor detail also dishonest? If you don’t have a large fan base, then find ways to develop one. How about establishing your own fan culture and encouraging more people to come to the home games to cheer for your team? Instead of focusing on this, they focus on deceitful practices. If they can’t get something as basic as honesty right in the league, what else can we trust them with?”
