Ancelotti: Players Would Accept Wage Cuts if Schedules Were Less Intense

On September 20, at the pre-La Liga match press conference, Ancelotti addressed Rodri’s previous comments about players potentially striking. The Italian manager suggested that players would be willing to accept wage cuts if schedules were less intense.

Ancelotti believes that participating in the expanded UEFA Champions League and the revamped Club World Cup could mean players might have to play up to 85 matches this season, leading some to complain about the overly tight schedule.

He stated at the press conference, “Football needs to reflect because our goal is to reduce the number of matches to minimize injuries. If this leads to reduced wages, then the aim is to decrease the number of matches players participate in, so I believe there wouldn’t be a problem with reducing wages if players play fewer matches.”

Earlier this week, Manchester City midfielder Rodri warned that players might take strike action due to concerns over increased workload. Several players, including Real Madrid’s Courtois and Carvajal, supported Rodri, but Ancelotti noted that the players’ threat to strike would not change the schedule for this season.

“It’s important to reflect on this issue, especially for the players who are already very tired. We must analyze this. Players are considering future changes.”
