FIFA introduced new rules regarding stoppage time during the 2022 World Cup, which led to increased added time in the English Premier League this season. Data analysis shows that Liverpool have benefited more than any other club in the league.
While UEFA has not adopted these regulations in its competitions, the Premier League embraced them early on. Researchers at StatsChecker have found that Liverpool gained six points due to extended stoppage time, Arsenal and Chelsea picked up four points each, Manchester City lost two points, and relegated Sheffield United lost as many as five points in added time.
Liverpool scored eight goals in stoppage time this season, with Núñez netting winners against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest. Elliott and Díaz also scored equalizers in injury time, while Matip unfortunately scored an own goal during added time, costing Liverpool points.
