Why wasn't Lisandro Martinez Sent Off for His Two-Footed Tackle? Premier League Officials Explain: He Did Not Make Contact with Daichi Kamada

In the fifth round of the Premier League match between Crystal Palace and Manchester United, Argentine central defender Lisandro Martinez made an extremely dangerous two-footed lunge while contesting the ball with Daichi Kamada, which shocked the spectators present.

In football, a two-footed tackle is considered a very dangerous action as it has a high potential to cause serious injury to the opposing player, possibly affecting their career. Martinez’s action was undoubtedly a significant challenge to the rules.

Fortunately, after review by VAR (Video Assistant Referee), it was determined that although Lisandro Martinez’s tackle was reckless, he did not actually make contact with Daichi Kamada, hence he was only shown a yellow card rather than being sent off with a red card.

The Premier League officials explained this decision via social media: “The referee issued a yellow card to Martinez for his foul on Kamada. After reviewing the incident through VAR, it was confirmed that the referee’s decision was reasonable, identifying it as a reckless tackle but one that did not make contact with Kamada.”

However, this ruling has also sparked some controversy. Former Nottingham Forest head coach Mark Warburton publicly expressed his dissatisfaction: “I am very surprised that Lisandro Martinez was not sent off for that tackle; his action could have almost broken Daichi Kamada’s ankle.”
