Arsenal striker Mitrovic is confident his red-hot form in the Saudi Pro League will continue, priming him to give England a “shock” in their opening group match, as reported by AFP on June 14.
Mitrovic was instrumental in Al-Hilal’s league and Saudi Crown Cup triumphs last season, outshining teammate Neymar despite less fame. While the Brazilian was injured, Mitrovic scored 40 goals in 43 games, leaving Cristiano Ronaldo in tears in the Crown Cup final and earning himself the nickname “God of Goals” across the Gulf.
The 29-year-old is currently with the Serbian national team for Euro competition and told The Times that he is in the best shape of his career, both physically and mentally. “This is the best period of my career, in terms of how I feel physically and mentally,” Mitrovic said. “I’ve played more here in Saudi Arabia than at Fulham, and now I’m at the best club, scoring lots of goals because I play almost every game. I believe I can do the same for the national team.”
Mitrovic is Serbia’s all-time leading scorer with 58 goals in 91 appearances. His partnership with Juventus forward Vlahovic will be crucial to Serbia’s Euro campaign, which marks the country’s debut as an independent nation in the tournament. Familiar with English football, Mitrovic acknowledges England’s strength but asserts that the Serbian team is fearless.
“If we had to pick the toughest game, it would be against England. Considering their players’ talent and their team’s history, it will be our biggest challenge and the hardest match. We’re looking forward to it, but we have nothing to lose,” Mitrovic concluded.
