The Euros are here! The 2024 UEFA European Championship will take place from June 14 to July 14, 2024, in Germany. Before the tournament kicks off, let’s look back at some Euro records:
Most Successful Nations —— Germany (West Germany), Spain: 3 Titles
Germany: The Mannschaft won in 1972, 1980, and 1996. Since the turn of the century, they haven’t lifted the trophy, but they remain tied with Spain as the most successful teams in Euro history. Germany also holds the record for the most runners-up appearances, with three (1972, 1996, and 2008).
Spain: They triumphed in 1964, 2008, and 2012. Between 2008 and 2012, La Roja achieved an unprecedented treble of major titles (2008 Euro, 2010 World Cup, 2012 Euro).
Top Scorer in Euro History —— Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal): 14 Goals
In 2004, a 19-year-old Portuguese prodigy named “CR7” made his Euro debut. Over the next two decades, he represented Portugal in five Euros, scoring 14 goals in 25 matches, making him the all-time leading scorer. That man is Cristiano Ronaldo, who also led his nation to the 2016 Euro title. This Euro will mark Ronaldo’s sixth appearance, and he still has a chance to extend his goal-scoring record.
Most Assists in Euro History —— Pavel Nedvěd (Czech Republic): 8 Assists
When you think of Czech footballers, does the Ballon d’Or winner “Iron Man” Jiří Nedvěd or Chelsea’s legendary goalkeeper Petr Čech come to mind? Not today! We’re honoring a低调 Czech midfielder: Pavel Nedvěd. With 118 appearances for the national team, he holds the Czech record and is also the Euro’s all-time assist leader (8). In the 1996 quarterfinals, his sublime chip helped Czech Republic beat Portugal 1-0 and secure a semifinal spot. In the 2004 Euro quarterfinals against Denmark, it was Nedvěd again, assisting on Jan Koller and Vratislav Lokvenc’s goals. A true veteran.
Most Appearances in Euro —— Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal): 25 Matches
Besides being the top scorer, Ronaldo is also the player with the most Euro appearances, surpassing fellow Portuguese Pepe (19) and João Moutinho (19). This further highlights Ronaldo’s enduring form on the international stage.
Most Goals in a Single Euro —— Michel Platini (France): 9 Goals
Many great strikers have graced the Euros, but only one claims the title of all-time top scorer: French legend Michel Platini. He scored nine goals in the 1984 tournament, a record that remains unbroken. Platini netted seven goals in the group stage alone, including two hat-tricks, another Euro first: the only player to achieve two hat-tricks in the main competition. His free-kick winner in the final against Spain secured the Euro title for Les Bleus. In 2016, French forward Antoine Griezmann came close with six goals in seven games.
