In the first round of Group A matches at the European Championship, Scotland, playing with ten men, suffered a 1-5 defeat to hosts Germany, starting their campaign on a losing note. After the match, Scotland’s manager Steve Clarke spoke to the media.
Clarke told ITV, “Germany were excellent, we couldn’t live with them. We lost control very early in the first half, we didn’t give ourselves a platform to defend, we weren’t good enough in possession, so we made it a difficult night for ourselves.”
“I thought the second half, playing with ten men, showed great character, we managed to get a goal and we’re disappointed to lose the fifth one. The things we need to do are still in front of us. Now it’s about the reaction, let’s see what they do.”
“I’ve said from the start, four points from the group was our target. We didn’t get any points tonight, so that remains the target for the next two games.”
