On October 26, Benteke stated that his career with the Belgium national team is not over and will only officially end when he announces his retirement.
Despite being 33 years old, Benteke remains confident: “Messi and Ronaldo are four or five years older than me. Since they are still active on the pitch, why should I stop? I may not have their abilities or accolades, but as a professional player, I can take care of my body.”
Benteke mentioned that joining the MLS has allowed him to step away from the spotlight: “When I was younger, playing in the Premier League, I enjoyed being recognized by fans on the street, signing autographs, and taking photos. But as I matured, I realized that scoring goals and winning matches are the most important things. Now, in the U.S., I can live a normal life after training, go to the park and mall on my own, without worrying about being recognized.”
Benteke spoke about his former club Aston Villa: “It’s a great club, the first one I played for in the Premier League. They have been away from the Champions League for too long, so I’m very happy they are participating this season.”
Benteke was not included in Belgium’s Euro 2024 squad, and his hopes of participating in the 2026 World Cup seem slim. Despite this, he has not considered retiring from the national team: “I am playing in a top-level league, and I am still a professional player. So why should I retire from the national team? As long as the national team calls me, I will be ready to play. Only on the day of my retirement will I officially say goodbye to the national team.”
