Moyes: Scotland can take advantage of Germany's huge pressure in opener

With the European Championship imminent, Scotland is set to face Germany in their Group A opener at 3 a.m. tomorrow. Ahead of the match, former West Ham United manager David Moyes, writing in The Times, expressed his belief that Scotland has a chance to defeat Germany in the first round.

Moyes writes: “While I’m now working as a commentator for UEFA and the BBC, I’ll be supporting Scotland in spirit, just as I did in 1977, 1990, and 1998. Big tournaments often produce surprises in the opening games, and I’m hoping for one today. Germany carries an enormous weight of expectation and pressure – could Scotland capitalize on that?

“Germany is the favorite to win the Euros, but there’s still a chance for Scotland. Opening matches are often closely contested, and you never know how much pressure affects the hosts. Scotland must find ways to stifle the Germans while staying solid defensively, denying them opportunities, and then look to counterattack.

“We have many competitive players who aren’t afraid of any challenge, as they’ve shown at club level. Reality suggests Germany is stronger, playing at home, making it a tough ask, but we have Clarke – a big admirer of his work, he’s made a significant contribution to Scottish football and is adept at getting the best out of his players.”
