This weekend, the 10th round of the Brazilian League kicks off, with one of the most anticipated fixtures being Ponte Preta against Novorizontino. Despite both teams currently sitting in the lower half of the league table, this match is an undisputed father-son showdown.
Ponte Preta’s head coach is the legendary Nelson Benedicto Baptista, who previously led his team to the J1 League title. At 73 years old, he stepped down from his role as manager of Ponte Preta last May and has been out of work until recently taking charge of Ponte Preta this month.
Eduardo Baptista, his son, is currently at the helm of Novorizontino. At 54, Eduardo followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming a coach after retiring in 2002, assisting his father at Nagoya Grampus and Ponte Preta. He became a head coach in his own right in 2014 and has been managing Novorizontino since November 2022.
This encounter marks the first time the father and son will face each other as opponents on the pitch, a rarity even in the annals of football history.
