Belgian legend questions Tedesco's tactics: Restricting De Bruyne's impact

In the opening match of the Euros, a surprising 0-1 loss to Slovakia, Belgian football great Marc Degryse criticized manager Roberto Tedesco’s lineup decisions.

According to Degryse, “Everything seemed against us, with enough chances to score but we couldn’t find the net. You have this feeling that if the first goal had gone in, Belgium would still have won, even with the second one being disallowed. But that’s not how it played out – Belgium only has itself to blame for the loss.”

He questioned why Tedesco chose Yannick Carrasco as a left-back while opting for a more defensive midfield pairing of Onana and Mangala. “Keep it simple, put a real left-back like Dedryck Boyata in his position, and alongside him, someone with more attacking qualities to complement De Bruyne. That way, De Bruyne would naturally touch the ball more and add more depth to the game.”

Degryse also found it puzzling that Tedesco waited until late in the game to introduce more attacking intent. “You could have started with the same attacking impetus, increasing your chances of taking an early lead. I’m not saying Tedesco’s choices lost the game, but his work wasn’t effective. What he was looking for didn’t pay off.”
