According to previous reports from multiple sources, negotiations between Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies and the club regarding a contract extension have been in limbo. Recently, both parties were said to have reached an agreement, but Bayern’s management has now rejected it.
As reported by TA, Bayern’s sports director, Hasan Salihamidžić, offered Davies a four-year deal with an annual salary of €14-16 million plus a signing bonus. This was slightly lower than the €16 million per year that Davies had initially sought, but his agent eventually accepted the proposal.
However, today’s decision from Bayern’s top brass not to approve the new contract indicates a change in strategy. Instead of “extend or sell,” they now plan to let Davies see out his current contract until 2025, enabling him to depart on a free transfer. Intriguingly, this would allow Real Madrid to sign him without a fee, while Bayern would still have Davies for one more season under their current terms.
The incoming Bayern manager is likely to still try to convince Davies to renew, as he will be a crucial component of the team next season. Recently, Davies was appointed captain of the Canadian national team and is set to lead them in the upcoming Copa América tournament.
