Tragedy! Panama U17 footballer killed in shooting after fight

According to The Mirror, an 18-year-old Panamanian footballer died after being shot in the head following an argument during a softball game.

The Panamanian U17 international, Giancarlos García, who had played in last year’s U17 World Cup, was watching a local softball match in María Chiquita earlier this week. The altercation turned violent, and García was shot in the head. Local media reports indicate that five other men between the ages of 22 and 39 were also injured in the shooting and were rushed to nearby hospitals. However, García’s family claims there were not enough ambulances to transport him.

Police stated that they found several injured individuals and others in shock upon arrival, and they arrested two men. Both have since been charged with murder and attempted murder, with one 21-year-old suspect currently in custody.

García had played as a defender for the top-tier team Alianza F.C. of Colón and was part of Panama’s U17 squad at the 2023 Indonesia World Cup.

In a statement, the club said, “At only 18 years old, he stood out not only for his skills on the field but also for his values and respect for teammates and coaches. We bid farewell to his physical presence, but his spirit and courage will forever be with us.”

The Panama Football Federation expressed its condolences on social media, saying, “Deeply saddened by the passing of young footballer Giancarlos García, a player for Alianza F.C. and a representative of our country in the 2023 Indonesia U17 World Cup. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones in this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace.”
