After a 20-year absence from the Euro main stage, Slovenian defender Jaka Bijol has expressed his confidence in interviews, stating that he was able to contain Cristiano Ronaldo in a friendly match in March and believes he can keep world-class strikers like Harry Kane “quiet” during the Euros.
Despite injury setbacks at Udinese last season, Bijol quickly recovered, saying, “It’s tough being out for a long time, but we bounced back quickly. I never doubted missing the Euros, and I feel stronger since my return.”
In the March friendly against Portugal, Bijol, fresh from injury, kept Ronaldo from scoring, “Ronaldo is one of the greatest players of all time, always hungry for goals, but we managed to restrict him with teamwork. That’s why the manager trusts me to be part of the Euro squad.”
Regarding the challenging group with Denmark, Serbia, and England, Bijol acknowledges the difficulty but remains optimistic, “We know the group stage won’t be easy, but we’ll stay positive and do everything possible to achieve good results and advance to the knockout rounds.”
When discussing the opponents’ star forwards, Bijol says of Kane, “He’s definitely among the top 5 strikers globally, very clever and finds gaps in defenses. Stopping him will be a challenge, but who’s to say it can’t be done?”
