US Blogger: Low Copa América Attendance Not Unprecedented, with Quarterfinals Below 50% Capacity in Past

A US-based blogger specializing in Major League Soccer (MLS Buzz) took to social media to point out that the low attendance at this year’s Copa América matches is not an unusual occurrence, as there have been similar situations in past editions of the tournament held in South America.

MLS Buzz wrote, “I get why people are complaining about Copa América ticket prices, but empty seats aren’t a new issue. It’s not just about pricing being unreasonable.”

“In the last Copa América hosted in South America, several group stage matches had attendances below 15,000. The quarterfinal match between Uruguay and Peru saw only 21,000 spectators, which was less than half the stadium’s capacity.”

The stadium for today’s match between Uruguay and Panama has a capacity of 65,000, and official figures show that 33,425 people attended, resulting in a 51.4% occupancy rate.
