Fabregas: Kane has lost the ability to press high, England lacks a clear game plan

Fabregas joins Rooney and Shearer for a deeper analysis of England’s performance.

Why was England tactically inferior against Denmark?

Fabregas: “I’m still trying to figure out what England wants to do in every match. Spain has a clear plan, they’re ambitious. The plan might work or not, but at least you know what they’re aiming for. England changes too much, I’d like to see more confidence when they attack. I think Kane no longer has the ability to press high. You can see other players like Bellingham, Saka, Rice doing it, but if one person doesn’t, it ruins the whole game.”

Rooney: “I think England was flat, lacking energy, and there wasn’t enough balance. I put some blame on the players. If Kane says he doesn’t know what to do after the game, that’s a problem, the players must take responsibility.”

Shearer: “We have world-class players, the manager’s job is to get the best out of them. We saw that in the first 35 minutes of the first game. In the second half of that game, we had no chance. Yesterday, we were terrible. I think there’s no plan, a complete lack of energy.”

Is Southgate confusing his players?

Fabregas: “Every team has a game plan. If you tell me the forward doesn’t know what to do, there’s a problem. The most successful coaches pay attention to details. Yesterday, Denmark was well-prepared, you could see the game plan. There’s obviously something not working for England.”

Rooney: “I think Southgate and Holland are working on the game plan. Southgate now has the opportunity to reassess and I hope he makes some changes to get us back in front.”

Shearer: “England’s players look confused to me, they don’t know when, how to attack, or when to pressure the opponent. For me, that’s down to the coach. In both games so far, opponents have had it too easy.”
